Anglican leaders highlight climate change

In 2006 the Church of England’s national environmental campaign Shrinking the Footprint called on all of us to ‘think globally, act locally’ to address the pressing issue of climate change. To learn more about how you can cut your carbon footprint please click here.

As we continue to take action to reduce the Church’s own carbon emissions, we have also established the Climate Justice Fund so that we can make a difference around the world where Anglican churches are helping poor communities to respond to the challenges of climate change.

Quotes

Rt Rev James Jones, Bishop of Liverpool
Rt Rev James Jones, Bishop of Liverpool
‘Climate change affects all of us, but it is the world’s poor who contribute least to the problem and who have the least capacity to adapt to a changing climate. The world’s poor are already suffering the most from its devastating impact. That is why, at its heart, climate change is a matter of justice.

Shrinking the Footprint challenged us to be aware of how our carbon consumption impacts on the lives of others and how we can respond by reducing that impact. The Climate Justice Fund is the logical next step for Christians for whom justice and climate change are issues of prayerful and practical concern.

‘It is not enough merely to cut our own carbon footprint; as Christians we have a responsibility to care for the poor by providing sustainable development that aids adaptation to a changing climate. The Climate Justice Fund enables you to join with others to help those who are hardest hit by climate change and most vulnerable to its effects, so that their communities and livelihoods can adapt to the changing demands of a changing climate.’
Rt Rev James Jones, Bishop of Liverpool

‘By 2050, two-thirds of my country will go under water and about 30 million people will be displaced and have no place of their own to live on this planet Earth, if we do not deal with this issue of global warming and climate change urgently and seriously.’
Rt Rev Michael Baroi, Bishop of Dhaka, Bangladesh

‘We all have a pivotal role to play in tackling the stark reality of climate change.’
Rt Rev and Rt Hon Richard Chartres, Bishop of London
